What Do Chamber Ambassadors Do?

Chamber ambassadors assist you in getting things done at your chamber. They are an army of super volunteers who can pitch in on a variety of community-facing activities but what exactly do they do and how do you recruit for that position?

What should I look for when recruiting chamber ambassadors?

What Do Chamber Ambassadors Do?

The short answer to what do chamber ambassadors do is anything you need at your chamber, although they most often seem to help with recruiting, retention, and engagement. Some chambers have a special chamber ambassadors group for social media. But largely they are the public-facing, non-staff members who can provide a businessperson’s perspective to future members. They can also be the ears of your chamber. Sometimes members don’t want to tell the chamber staff things about the chamber. Maybe they don’t want to hurt your feelings or perhaps they don’t feel comfortable addressing certain issues with you. Ambassadors fit these roles beautifully.

Things to Consider Before Launching a Chamber Ambassadors Program

If you’re considering instituting a chamber ambassadors program:

  • decide what your need is. Do you want more social shares? Are you looking to improve recruitment or retention?
  • think about the training and leadership necessary. Are the skills required for this position things people already have? What training will be provided?
  • consider the specific expectations of the group. Will they have a specific headcount to recruit or a number of hours expected?
  • decide upon the reward. Will you give a pat on the back or offer an awards/points system for desired activities? The Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce provides gift certificates to chamber ambassadors who sign new members.

No matter what you decide about the specifics, you want to approach people who are genuinely excited about the chamber. Target members who have received great value from chamber membership and will represent you well.

Next, lay out what is expected of them, including how many hours a week it will take. Be honest about your expectations and everyone will be more apt to stay for the long term.
